The Regina Pats were looking to snap a two game slide when they continued their six game road trip in Spokane against the Chiefs on Saturday night. The Pats were coming off a disappointing 5-3 loss on Kootenay on Friday to the Ice. The Chiefs meanwhile had been off since Sunday when they lost in Portland to the Winterhawks 5-1. The Pats Adam Brooks carried a 12 game point streak into the game with 8 goals and 16 assists over that stretch while Austin Wagner had an 8 game streak going with 5 goals and 9 assists. The Pats were once again without starting goaltender Tyler Brown and so Jordan Hollett got the nod and Brian Williams was still not available. Here are the lineups for the game with the starters highlighted.
Pats scratches – Williams, Pouteau, Williams and either McAmmond or Richards.
Chiefs scratches – Faith, Henderson, Kopeck and Anderson.
In the first period the Pats had some great early chances but goaltender Tyson Verhelst made some big stops to keep the game scoreless. The Chiefs then got the games first powerplay and Kailer Yamamoto had a great one time chance in the slot but Jordan Hollett made a massive save and then the Pats went down the ice shorthanded and Adam Brooks fed Austin Wagner in front and he tipped in his 5th short handed goal of the year to make it 1-0. It was his 16th of the year overall at 9:47. The Pats killed the rest of the penalty and then got a powerplay of their own. Connor Hobbs hammered a shot from the point into the top corner for his 12th from Sam Steel at 12:56 and it was 2-0. 17 seconds later the Pats extended the lead to 3-0, Jared Freadrich beat Verhelst from the right point through the 5-hole for his 2nd from Liam Schioler at 13:13. The Chiefs picked up a second powerplay on a questionable call and got on the board. Hudson Elynuik scored on a centering feed from Keanu Yamamoto at 16:18. Tyson Helgesen the second assist and it was a 3-1 game. The Pats responded however at 17:49 when Adam Brooks banked in his 23rd from below the goal line, off the goaltender and in. Assists to Connor Hobbs and James Hilsendager and it was 4-1 and that was the score after 20 minutes. The Chiefs outshot the Pats 13-12 in the period.
In the second the Pats added to their lead at 4:54. Lane Zablocki fed Sam Steel in front and he scored his 14th to make it 5-1. Sergey Zborovskiy the second assist. The game tightened up after that though the Pats had their chances, Riley Woods came the closest to the 6th goal but couldn’t get the puck to settle down in front. The Pats played a steady period outshooting the Chiefs 11-6 and 23-19 overall and led 5-1 after the break.
In the third the Chiefs got to within 3 when Ethan McIndoe put in a rebound for his 5th of the season at 4:03 and it was 5-2. However the Pats got that back on a 4 on 3 powerplay when Sam Steel scored into the top corner for his second of the night and 15th of the season from Adam Brooks and Connor Hobbs at 7:49 and it was 6-2. They made it 7-2 when Austin Wagner scored his second of the night on a breakaway at 11:44. Adam Brooks and Jared Freadrich the assists. That was the final score, the shots on goal were 9-9 in the period and the Pats led overall 32-28.
The Pats poweerplay went 2 for 4 in the game and the penalty kill was 4 for 5 with a short handed goal.
The third star of the game went to the Pats Connor Hobbs who had a goal and two assists in the win. The second star to Sam Steel who scored twice and had a helper while the first star went to Adam Brooks who had a goal and 3 assists.
The Pats are back in action on Tuesday in Everett against the Silvertips with a 9 o’clock puck drop Regina time on 620 CKRM.
