The Canadian Union of Public Employees wants private, for-profit blood donor clinics banned in Saskatchewan.
The union’s call is in response to a move by Canadian Plasma Resources to set up a clinic in Saskatoon.
The business plans to pay people with 25-dollar gift cards for making plasma donations for medical therapies which would not include transfusions.
Health Canada has told The Canadian Press that Canadian Plasma Resources is licensed to operate two sites in Toronto, although they have never been opened.
The Ontario government has now banned such clinics and the federal N-D-P wants Ottawa to do the same thing, but Saskatchewan Health Minister Dustin Duncan has said his province would not follow suit.
