The Regina Pats won their biggest game of the season to date on Friday night, 5-1 over the Medicine Hat Tigers. With the victory the Pats extend their lead over Medicine Hat to 7 points for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
In the first period the Pats got off to a great start when Sean Richards tipped a point shot home for his 2nd of the year with assists to Chase Harrison and Adam Brooks at 3:03 to make it 1-0. Then 4 on 4 Austin Wagner tipped another one past Nick Schneider for his 19th. Adam Brooks and Jared Freadrich the helpers at 10:29 and it was a 2-0 game. The Pats powerplay got it to 3-0 at 14:38 when Lane Zablocki buried a rebound for his 11th from Austin Wagner and Adam Brooks. The Tigers powerplay responded at 17:29 when Alex Mowbray scored on a rebound with the lone assist to Brian Williams and it was 3-1. That was the score after 1 with the Tigers leading the shots 15-14.
In the second the Pats stormed out of the gate and outshot Medicine Hat 11-1 in the first 5 minutes but Nick Schneider was fantastic, keeping the game 3-1. Regina finally broke through with their 4th goal at 11:05 when Sam Steel scored on another rebound for his 18th, setting a career high in goals. Jared Freadrich the lone assist and it was 4-1. That was hot the game sat after 40 minutes, the Pats outshot Medcine Hat 23-8 in the period and led 37-23 overall.
In the third the Tigers carried the bulk of the play but could not beat Tyler Brown. The Pats added an empty netter with 1:02 left on the clock to make it 5-1 and that was the final score. Medicine Hat outshot Regina 19-8 in the period but the Pats led overall 45-42.
The Pats powerplay went 1 for 5 in the win and the penalty kill was 5 for 6.
The third star of the game went to the Pats Jared Freadrich who had 2 assists in the win. The second star to Tyler Brown who stopped 41 of 42 shots for his 10th victory and the first star to Adam Brooks who had 3 assists.
The Pats are right back at it Saturday night when the Prince George Cougars visit the Brandt Centre with a 7 o’clock puck drop on 620 CKRM.
