The NDP is bashing the SaskParty government for cutting funding to homeless shelters in the province.
NDP Leader Cam Broten called the cuts disgusting and shortsighted on Tuesday afternoon, outside the Lighthouse in Saskatoon.
The government claims there haven’t been any cuts and Broten says he’s appalled to hear that.
“Why on earth are homeless shelters concerned and upset about this then?”
In Saskatoon, an individual aiming to use these facilities needs to pay for the service, often times with help from Social Services.
The ‘cuts’, which are more of a funding shortfall, come as a result of these individuals being declined.
Jeff Reddekopp with the Ministry of Social Services says the Lighthouse has added more beds, but the contract hasn’t changed with the increase.
“We noticed billing increasing so we took steps to make sure that any billing coming to us was within terms of the contract.”
The government says the Lighthouse recently saw an increase of funding for $150,000.
