One of the heads of the Royal Canadian Legion in Saskatchewan says an alarming number of military veterans are either homeless or on the verge of becoming homeless.
Recent homeless counts in Saskatoon and Regina estimate eight to 10 per cent of the homeless population are former military members.
However, Chad Wagner believes because of pride a number of veterans don’t come forward, so he estimates the number could be as high as 15 per cent.
Wagner says the veterans have seen a lot of bad things, so it can be hard to transition back to what civilians would call a normal life.
The Legion’s Leave the Streets Behind program tries to help veterans get their life back together by providing a home, furniture, food and medicine.
