Premier Brad Wall says a possible nation-wide carbon tax is the last thing the economy needs right now.
Talks of a plan for a national minimum tax on greenhouse gas emissions have come out of Ottawa, with Ontario’s Environment Minister saying it would ‘level the playing field’ between provinces.
Wall says the tax would be a bad idea both provincially and nationally.
“This is not right for Saskatchewan, and may I say, I don’t think it’s right for the country right now. The country’s economy is not as strong as anyone would like it, and I just don’t think now is the time for a carbon levy.”
Wall will meet with fellow premiers and the Prime Minister on March 3 at the first ministers’ climate summit.
While he’s there he plans to continue to oppose any sort of carbon tax, and push for talks on the country’s economy.
