Farmers are continuing to get set for seeding, and that includes planning for pastures.
Lorne Klein, a regional forage specialist with Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Agriculture, says seeding rates for perennial forages are something producers should keep in mind.
The rule of thumb is 10 pounds per acre, but it may not be the correct rate for what is being grown.
Klein says farmers need to calculate how many seeds per pound are in each of the species, and then determine how many seed per square foot they’re putting on.
Klein adds the target rate of seeds per square foot depends on the soil zone you are in.
