The Regina Pats got an incredible effort on Friday night and beat the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors 5-4 in a shootout.
In the first period the Pats got off to a great start with a lot of pressure and opened the scoring at 3:51. Lane Zablocki fed Adam Brooks all alone in front on a 2 on 1 and he buried his 36th. Connor Hobbs the second helper and it was 1-0. The Pats kept coming but Zach Sawchenko shut the door on an Austin Wagner breakaway and then denied Jared McAmmond on a great chance in tight. The Warriors then got the game even at 10:08. Dryden Hunt worked a give and go with Brayden Point and then outwaited Hollett on the backhand and scored his league leading 55th of the year. Colin Paradis the other assist and it was 1-1. The Warriors were able to take the lead at 12:24 when Tristin Langan banged home a loose puck after a scramble in the crease for his 3rd of the year. Assists to Jesse Shynkaruk and Brayden Watts and it was 2-1. The Pats didn’t back down after that and got a lot of pucks on goal but Sawchenko kept the Warriors ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes. The Pats outshot Moose Jaw 17-11 in the frame.
In the final period the Warriors got the games second powerplay but again the Pats killed it off. Moments after it expired Adam Brooks willed the Pats to a go ahead goal. He stole the puck at center, skated into the Warrior zone on the right wing, shielded to the goalline and centered for Lane Zablocki who scored his 17th at 6:44 and it was 4-3. The game stayed that way until the final minute when the Warriors pulled Sawchenko for the extra attacker. Off a faceoff Nikita Popugaev beat Jordan Hollett 5-hole for his 16th from Tristin Langan and Tanner Jeannot and it was 4-4 at 19:34, forcing overtime. The Pats outshot the Warriors 16-8 in the third and led 46-26 overall.
In the extra frame the Pats went to their third penalty kill but came up big and kept the game 4-4 and we went to a shootout. The shots on goal were 2-2 in the period and the Pats led overall 48-28.
In the shootout, Sam Steel scored for the Pats as the third shooter and Jordan Hollett stopped all 3 Warriors and the Pats won 5-4 the final score.
The Pats and Warriors meet in a rematch at Mosaic Place in Moose Jaw Saturday night at 7 o’clock on 620 CKRM.
