The Regina Pats took 12 penalties in game 1 in Lethbridge and lost 6-3 to the Hurricanes.
In the first period the Pats took a penalty just 31 second in and the Hurricanes got the first goal of the series. Cory Millette took a pas sin front, spun and back handed it into the top of the goal for his 1st at 1:54. Kord Pankewicz and Egor Babenko the assists and it was 1-0. The Pats didn’t panic and had some great chances the other way after that but Stuart Skinner made some big stops to keep it 1-0. The Canes got a second powerplay and made it 2-0. Tyler Wong centred for Brayden Burke who scored his 1st at 14:07. Andrew Nielsen the second assist on the Canes second PP goal. The Pats responded with a 5 on 3 powerplay. Adam Brooks fired off the far post and it came off, hit the leg of Skinner and went in. Brooks with his first from Cole Sanford and Sam Steel at 18:57 and it was 2-1. That was the score after 1 with both teams putting 13 shots on net.
In the second the Pats really took over in the first half of the frame. First Austin Wagner scored to tie it 2-2 at 4:16. He streaked up the left wing and ripped a shot just inside the far post for his 1st from Adam Brooks and Sergey Zborovskiy. Than on the powerplay the Pats took their first lead, Connor Hobbs hammered a slap shot from the point for his 1st with assists to Adam Brooks and Cole Sanford at 9:27 and it was 3-2. After the media timeout the Hurricanes turned the tide back the other way and got the game tied at 16:21 off an offensive zone faceoff. Carter Folk was left all alone in front and he took a pass and buried his 1st to tie the game 3-3. Arvin Atwal and Egor Babenko the assists. The game stayed tied heading to the third, the Canes outshot the Pats 13-9 in the period and led 26-22 overall.
The Pats fell apart in the third. The Hurricanes tied it up 41 seconds in when Brayden Burke scored his second of the night with assists to Giorgio Estephan and Arvin Atwal. The Pats took 6 penalties in the period and the Canes scored twice. First at 5:54, Cory Millette with his second and then at 15:20 Kord Pankewicz made it 6-3 with his 1st and that was the final score. The Hurricanes outshot the Pats 11-7 in the period and 37-29 overall.
The Pats powerplay was 2 for 6 in the game and the penalty kill went 8 for 12.
The third star of the game went to the Hurricanes Brayden Burke who had 2 goals. The second star to the Pats Adam Brooks who had a goal and 2 assists and the first star to Lethbridge forward Cory Millette who scored twice and added a helper in the win.
The Pats and Hurricanes play game 2 of their best of seven Eastern Conference round 1 series on Saturday in Lethbridge at 7 o’clock on 620 CKRM.
