A Saskatoon team will be representing Canada at the pinnacle of combat robotics.
The 7-person Eh Team and 49 other groups will compete for bragging rights and prize money at the international Battlebots competition in Los Angeles.
Team captain Julia Chernushevich, an engineer away from the robot, says she and a group of friends have been following BattleBots closely since it resurfaced last year.
Once their design was approved and they were given notice they would be one of the combatants, Chernushevich says the team has been working at the shop for 48 hours a week to prepare their robot, Bucktooth Burl.
Designed like a beaver, the 250 kilogram robot has a cylindrical spinner at the front with sharp teeth that rotate at 2800 revolutions a minute.
Chernushevich says their robot, which is still under construction, is designed as a flipper, so they will hope to flip their opponent rather than using brute force.
The team ships down their robot March 31st, and the competition begins April 15th.
Chernushevich says BattleBots is the big combat robotics competition in the world, with 5 million people watching the finale on network television last year.
She says there’s also a Canadian battle within Battlebots. An Ontario team is also entered, so Chernushevich says there may be an East vs. West battle if they face off.
