The Regina Pats got off to a great start in game 1 on the road but gave up three unanswered goals and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night.
In the first period the Pats got an early powerplay and made the Rebels pay. Sam Steel tipped in a point shot for his 5th of the post season with assists to Colby Williams and Adam Brooks at 2:14 and it was 1-0. The Rebels started to press a bit and got their first powerplay but the Pats killed it off and then went to their second man advantage. Off a faceoff the Rebels got all crossed up and Adam Brooks was able to feed Cole Sanford all alone in the slot and he walked in and scored 5-hole on Martin for his 4th. Sam Steel the second helper at 13:04 and it was 2-0. The teams traded powerplasy after that, both killing them off and then Red Deer took their fourth penalty with 2.4 seconds left and that carried over into the second. The Pats took the 2 goal lead to the break and led on the shot clock 10-4.
In the second the Pats were unable to capitalize on the powerplay to start the second and the game slowed down after that with a lot of whistles. The Pats were in the driver seat, shutting things down until Robbie Holmes and Colby Williams took coincidental minors and the Rebels went up 2 men. They got on the board at 12:46 when Adam Helweka scored his 6th from Jake DeBrusk and Luke Philp and the Pats lead was 2-1. 28 seconds later, on the second powerplay, Colton Bobyk hammered a slap shot from the right point into the top corner for his 1st with assists to Josh Mahura and Brandon Hagel and it was a 2-2 game. The Pats almost got the lead back a short time later but Cole Sanford ripped one off the far post and it stayed out. The Pats had a strong end to the period but the game remained tied after 40 minutes. The Rebels outshot the Pats 14-4 in the period and led 18-14 overall.
In the third the Rebels took their first lead at 7:51 when Evan Polei slipped a hip check, skated right corcle and put one off the cross bar and in for his 4th and it was 3-2. The Pats had a glorious chance late in the period with a 5 on 3 powerplay for 48 seconds but could not convert and the Rebels shut it down the rest of the way for a 3-2, game 1 win. The Rebels outshot the Pats 13-8 in the period and 31-22 overall.
The Pats powerplay was 2 for 6 in the game and the penalty kill was 3 for 5.
The third star of the game went to the Rebels Evan Polei who scored the game winner. The second star to the Pats Adam Brooks who had two assists and the first star to Colton Bobyk of the Rebels who had a goal and an assist.
The Pats and Rebels will meet in game 2 on Sunday at 5 o’clock on 620 CKRM.
