The Regina Pats went back and forth with Red Deer on Sunday night but dropped a 4-3 decision and trail the Rebels 2-0 in the series.
In the first period the Pats gave up an early powerplay but killed it off. The Rebels then took two penalties on the same play and the Pats went up 2 men. That’s when Sam Steel buried his 5th of the post season from the right side with assists to Connor Hobbs and Lane Zablocki at 6:22 and for the second time in the series the Pats scored first. The game stayed 1-0 until late in the period when the Pats went to their second penalty kill and this time the Rebels converted. Josh Mahura beat a screened Tyler Brown from the blueline for his 1st. Assists to Brandon Hagel and Adam Musil and it was 1-1 at 16:57. That was the score after 20 minutes with Red Deer leading on the shot clock 11-7.
In the second the Rebels took their first lead at 5:16. Michael Spacek scored his first career playoff goal from the right side with assists to Brandon Hagel and Austin Strand and it was 2-1. The Pats powerplay tied it up 10 minutes later when Cole Sanford got a flip shot over the shoulder of Trevor Martin from the left goal line for his 5th. Adam Brooks and Colby Williams the assists and it was 2-2. The Pats went to the penalty kill however right after that and the Rebels took the lead back. Adam Helewka beat a screened Brown with a shot form the top of the right circle at 17:44. His team leading 7th from Haydn Fleury and it was 3-2. The Rebels afforded the Pats another powerplay late in the period and Regina capitalized. Adam Brooks banged in a rebound for his 6th from Connor Hobbs and Cole Sanford at 19:58 to tie the game 3-3 heading to the 3rd. The Pats outshot the Rebels 17-11 in the second and led 24-22 overall.
In the third the Pats had a great opportunity with a 4 minute powerplay to take the lead but the Rebels penalty kill came up big and the game remained 3-3. The Rebels picked up their 4th poweprlay of the game midway through the frame and on it Adam Musil tipped in a point shot for his 2nd from Josh Mahura and Evan Polei at 11:18 to make it 4-3. The Pats could not break through for a tieing goal, even with the extra attacker and lost game 2 and now trail the series 2-0. The Pats outshot the Rebels 14-10 in the third and 38-32 overall.
The Pats powerplay was 3 for 6 in the game while the penalty kill was 1 for 4.
The third star of the game went to the Pats Cole Sanford who had a goal and an assist. The second star to the Rebels Adam Musil who scored the game winner and added an assist and the first star to Red Deers Josh Mahura who had a goal and as assist.
The Pats will host the Rebels in game 3 on Tuesday night at the Brandt Centre at 7 o’clock on 620 CKRM.
