The Kidney Foundation of Canada is encouraging people to learn more about donations during National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week.
According to the foundation, 90 per cent of Canadians have intentions to become donors, but fail to follow through.
Joyce Van Deurzen, Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Branch, says it all starts with better communication.
“We encourage everyoen to make their wishes known to their family right now,” said Deurzen. “Less than half the people who are willing to be an organ donor have told their family that is, in fact, their wishes.”
Van Deurzen says just one organ donor could help up to eight people, and in Canada 15 people are told each day their kidneys have failed.
