An inquest is scheduled to begin today into the death of a woman who suffered an apparent heart attack in her cell three years ago at the Regional Psychiatric Centre in Saskatoon.
The inquest is to establish the circumstances of 35-year-old Kinew James’ death and could make recommendations to prevent other deaths.
The Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies hopes the inquest will lead to better care for aboriginal women with mental health issues who are serving time in prison.
The society was granted standing at the inquest after first being denied by the Saskatchewan coroner’s office.
