Chris Vandenbreekel of Mix 107.3 says they were evacuated Tuesday afternoon, but were briefed on this situation Wednesday morning.
He says most of the structure fires were put out last night, but a significant amount was lost.
“We know that 80 percent of Beacon Hill has been lost, that’s a lot of homes, the estimate is 1,600 structures.”
He says officials predict the fires will get worse before they get better.
“It’s supposed to be extreme conditions today, high winds later in the afternoon gusting to 50 km/h, coming out of the west which will blow it more towards town and downtown.”
Officials say the next 24 hours are crucial to the safety of those who have already evacuated.
The federal government has mobilized both the army and air force to the area.
