Syncrude Canada reports a 200-head bison herd is doing well on its reclaimed oilsands mine at Mildred Lake, even with the wildfire that forced the evacuation of Fort McMurray burning nearby.
Greg Fuhr, Syncrude Canada’s vice president of mining and extraction, says critical staff who remained in the area have checked in on the animals daily.
Fuhr says the smoke hasn’t bothered the bison, noting one of the interesting things about the smoky conditions is the number of insects that would typically irritate them are not around.
Syncrude brought the bison to its property in 1993 to help it learn about how the reclaimed land would support large mammals.
