Premier Brad Wall is defending a proposed move by SaskPower to raise rates five per-cent in July and another 5 per-cent on January first.
The opposition accuses the SaskParty of crown corporation mismanagement for rising rates.
The NDP says employers are pointing to possible lay-offs because of the proposed rate hikes.
But Premier Brad Wall says Saskatchewan has an expanding economy and needs to upgrade an aging power infrastructure.
Wall says unlike the NDP, the SaskParty government has taken dividends only twice from SaskPower.
He says the NDP left the province with billions of dollars in an infrastructure gap at SaskPower.
He says the province still has the third lowest bundle cost of utility rates in Canada.
