New Democrat MP Ruth Ellen Brosseau says Prime Minister Justin Trudeau should not face any parliamentary sanctions for knocking her over with his elbow.
New Democrat MP David Christopherson shared her views with the all-party committee that is gathering today to discuss how to respond to the incident from earlier this month, when Trudeau had tried to pull Conservative whip Gord Brown through a group of New Democrats who were standing in his way.
Trudeau knocked into Brosseau, who then missed a vote on the Liberal government’s bill on doctor-assisted dying.
Christopherson read a statement from Brosseau, who says that Trudeau’s actions were unprecedented and unacceptable, but she has accepted his apology and wants everyone to move on.
The Liberal-dominated Commons committee of procedure and House affairs does not have the power to punish Trudeau directly, only refer a course of action to the House of Commons, which can then accept, reject or ignore its report.
