The National Trust for Canada has placed wooden grain elevators on its Top 10 Endangered Places list.
The organization, which tries to raise awareness of the value of historic places to quality of life, calls the buildings “rural icons vanishing from the landscape.”
Once nearly 6,000 of the elevators dotted the country, mainly across the Prairies.
The Trust says less than 14 per cent of wooden grain elevators still stand, and only 23 have been designated heritage buildings.
