Regina’s mayor says Pride celebrations in the Queen City this year mean more than ever before.
Michael Fougere says the recent massacre at a gay night club in Orlando, Florida is still fresh in the minds of people – even in Regina.
The mayor was on hand Monday to raise the Pride flag to start the first day of Queen City Pride festivities along with the co-chair of Queen City Pride, Dan SHier.
Regina Police acting Chief Dean Rae says officers will be walking in the Pride Parade on Saturday.
As a gesture of respect, moments after Regina’s Pride flag was raised, it was lowered to half-mast to honour those killed in the Orlando Pulse Club massacre.
Sunday night in Orlando, tens of thousands of people held up candles around a lake in the heart of downtown Orlando as the names of the 49 victims who died at the Pulse were recited.
Fifty-three others were injured at the club before the gunman, Omar Mateen, was killed in a shootout with police.
