A couple from Outlook is this years winner in the Outstanding Young Farmer competition in Saskatchewan.
Dan and Chelsea Erlandson grow over 50 different varieties of vegetables and attends eight farmers’ markets weekly, six in Saskatoon and two in Regina.
Dan Erlandson says he is a bit overwhelmed to win the title.
He says growing vegetables can be profitable on his irrigated 200 acre farm.
He says it is more profitable on a per acre basis than grain farming, but large grain farms will have an overall larger profit.
He says it is labour intensive and he hires 29 season workers from Mexico.
His biggest crops are Brussel Sprouts, sweet corn, broccoli and celery.
His wife is the secretary-treasurer of the Saskatchewan Vegetable Growers Association.
She says there are about 50 members in the organization.
The couple won the title at the close of the Canada Farm Progress Show in Regina.
