National Aboriginal Day is being recognized across Canada Tuesday.
Events are being held in cities including Regina which recognize the achievements of First Nations people throughout history.
Elder Norma-Jean Byrd says they Day was first proclaimed 20 years ago in 1996.
Elder Byrd says while she has seen some change in the last 20 years, there is still much to do. “Some of the reserves are like third world countries. We talk about third world countries and we give a lot of support to those communities, not saying that you shouldn’t give them support but what about our own back yard. Come of them don’t even have clean water to drink.”
Hundreds of people gathered in the City Square Plaza in Regina for National Aboriginal Day on Tuesday.
