The power outage that affected many Saskatoon neighbourhoods Monday afternoon was caused by a poplar tree.
Trevor Bell, the director of Saskatoon Light & Power says a large branch fell onto one of the main high-voltage transmission lines near Taylor Street and Preston Avenue at 2:33 p.m.
It tripped the eastern portion of the transmission ring and cascaded through 18 of 23 substations.
The outage affected the east side, north end, the northern portion of downtown and some other areas.
Power was restored to much of downtown within 14 minutes while crews trimmed back the tree branches in the affected area.
When it was safe, the rest of the city was re-energized, Bell says.
