The Saskatchewan Ministry of Social Services and Finance have made contingency plans with the possibility of a Canada Post service disruption as early as this weekend.
For Social Services, critical cheque payments were mailed on June 23rd or earlier and should arrive before any disruption. Most of the ministry’s payments are made through direct deposit but Clients, caregivers, service providers and vendors who do not will be able to pick up the cheques at ministry service centres throughout the province.
Finance meanwhile advises businesses of ways to file and pay their consumption taxes by the monthly deadline.
• Businesses registered with the Saskatchewan Electronic Tax Service (SETS) can file as usual.
• Businesses not registered with SETS can log onto www.gov.sk.ca/finance and click on the E-file logo, and file the return using the EFILE code printed on the tax return. Payment of the tax owing may be made through Internet banking. Businesses will need to set up Saskatchewan Finance as a payee and provide their tax account number.
• Businesses may take the completed tax return and payment to some chartered banks. Saskatchewan credit unions, CIBC and the Bank of Montreal have discontinued offering this service.
Businesses are required to file and pay their taxes on time in the event of a postal disruption. To help businesses in the near term, the Ministry of Finance sent out June consumption tax returns (due July 20) earlier than unusual and included payment options and information with the returns to help mitigate the impact of a Canada Post mail service disruption.

In the event that a postal disruption continues and the ministry is unable to mail out future tax returns, businesses may sign up for email notifications for future tax returns through our SETS application. This will replace the paper return and will include the EFILE Code for those businesses that have not registered with SETS.
Businesses can also call our office to receive their EFILE Code or print a blank tax return on the Finance website at www.saskatchewan.ca/postal-strike to deliver with their payment.
Many Saskatchewan businesses receive refund payments from the Ministry of Finance. Those that receive their refunds through direct deposit will not be affected by the postal disruption.
Businesses not set up with direct deposit will be contacted when their refund is processed and given the option to either establish direct deposit, have the refund mailed after the postal disruption is resolved, or sent to the business courier collect.
