The Salvation Army has started up its annual back-to-school Backpack program.
The initiative aims to fill backpacks with school supplies for children whose families can’t afford them.
Last year the program supplied 904 full backpacks for children in the community.
This year, their goal is to supply 1000 backpacks.
Val Wiks with the Salvation Army says the program has grown significantly since it started eight years ago.
“When we first started, we were doing 60 to 70 backpacks,” Wiks said.
Registration for the program runs from August 6 until August 19.
People can drop off school supplies at the Haven of Hope Ministries, located at 2240 13th Ave., or either of the Salvation Army Thrift Stores.
The thrift stores are located at 840 Albert St. and 1711 Dewdney Ave. East.
