Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness says Canada’s threat level remains at medium following Wednesday’s attempted terror attack in Strathroy, Ont.
Goodale spoke in Regina on Thursday and said the federal government is taking steps to mitigate future terror attacks.
One of those initiatives is the opening of a new office which will counter-radicalization.
“Its purpose will be to develop and coordinate expertise in identifying those who could be vulnerable to radicalization. And to try to connect with them to try to head off tragedies before they happen,” said Goodale.
He also took the time to thank security and intelligence officials for identifying the terrorist threat, saying something much more awful would have happened if they hadn’t intervened.
The Islamic State group says Aaron Driver’s only mistake was releasing a martyrdom video before carrying out a suicide attack.
The 24-year-old was killed Wednesday in a confrontation with police, after an F-B-I tip led Mounties on what they called a “race against time” to stop a terror attack.
The militant group’s media arm says Driver was a — quote — “soldier of the Islamic State.”
R-C-M-P say he planned to carry out a suicide bombing in an urban centre during rush hour.
