The former President of the Saskatchewan Government and General Employees union returned to her roots.
Barb Byers, former President of the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union (SGEU) and as Saskatchewan Federation of Labour President (SFL) was in Regina Monday for Labour Day events scheduled for the Queen City.
Byers is the Canadian Labour Congress’ Secretary-Treasurer but was first elected as a CLC Executive Vice-President in 2002.
As a social worker in Saskatchewan, Barb addressed issues of poverty, youth unemployment, aboriginal concerns, equality for all and labour rights and that was the focus of her stop in Saskatchewan for the long weekend.
Byers says she was in Regina to discuss the Canadian Pension planand good jobs for all.
The event was cancelled due to weather but the food and drinks bought for the event is being donated to different shelters within the city.
Last December Byers was named a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of her “contributions as an important voice in the Canadian labour movement.”
