The director for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation in Winnipeg says a recent recognition of a residential school cemetery by Regina’s city council is exactly what needs to be happening.
Ry Moran says there are many other locations exactly like the one in Regina, and the city’s decision to grant the site municipal heritage status can help encourage other jurisdictions to follow.
The cemetery is outside the former Regina Indian Industrial School, which operated from 1891 to 1910.
A 2014 land survey found there were potentially 22 to 40 unmarked graves of children in the cemetery.
