A prisoner has died in a holding cell at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.
In a release, Saskatoon Police say it happened around 6:00pm Saturday.
Ministry of Justice spokesperson Drew Wilby says the 49-year old inmate was apparently found unresponsive in his cell.
He says EMS and Saskatoon Police were immediately notified about the incident.
Wilby says the Coroner’s Office will be conducting an investigation as well as the Ministry of Justice.
According to a government release, it’s protocol for the Ministry to conduct its own, internal investigation to assess the performance of policies, procedures and staff response to the incident.
