A plume of dark smoke hangs over Gull Lake, Sask. – about 30 minutes west of Swift Current – after a fire sparked at a hotel in that town early Sunday morning.
Swift Current Rural RCMP said the blaze started around 8 a.m. at the town’s Claredon Hotel.
Pictures posted onto social media show the members of the volunteer fire crew working on containing the flames.
Jun Yang owns the Safe and Sound Inn, one of the three hotels in Gull Lake. She says the Claredon Hotel was a landmark.
“We really show sympathy to that hotel because — its second floor is a hotel, but the main floor is a bar,” explained Yang. “It’s a big get together place for the town’s people.”
Yang says the flames coming from the Claredon Hotel were so high, she could see them from two blocks away.
The Clarendon Hotel is at least one hundred years old.
