Four Saskatchewan people were amongst 43 to be honored for their courage in Ottawa Friday morning
Dianne and Lorne Matsalla along with Geraldine and Phillip Shewchuk were awarded bravery medals by governor-general David Johnston at a ceremony at Rideau Hall.
In July of 2010, the four came to the aid of a farmer who had been shot near Rama even though there was a risk of being shot themselves.
The victim had been working in a field when he was shot in the shoulder by his neighbour–Rodney Hanishewski.
The Matsallas and Shewchuks located the farmer, not knowing if the shooter was still around, and loaded him into a vehicle driving him to safety.
Hanishewski pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was sentenced to nine years in jail.
