The first thing I did when I came into work this morning was to check the news wire to see if it was all a bad dream. Nope. Trump did actually win the presidency! Oh well, time to move on.
Last night Evans and I were at the Friends of the Riders Touchdown Lottery announcing all of the major prize winners. We called 5 $100,000 Touchdown Cash Prize winners and the winner of the 50/50. For the first time ever, we actually got a hold of all the winners! Six for Six!
The winner of the 50/50 was Darwin Duncombe of Carnduff who won just over $300,000! Needless to say, he was just a little shell-shocked. Hey, who wouldn’t be? Right now I’m sifting through records to see if somehow I’m related to Mr. Duncombe, or uncle Darwin, as I like to call him!
It was a quick night for the lottery. We were all wrapped up by 7:30. Thank the good lord for computers. When Willy Cole started announcing the lottery winners back in 1989, things took a lot longer. There were many nights that Willy didn’t get out of there until after 1! Then it was back in at 4 to get back to work here at the radio station! Of course, for Willy, 18 hour days were the norm!
I remember one year when I was giving Willy a hand with the lottery, I told him if I won the $100,000 grand prize, I’d sleep like a baby that night. He told me if I won the $100,000, I probably wouldn’t sleep for a month. Touche. He knew me well!
So, that’s it for the lottery this year and the last time the lottery would be held at the old Mosaic Stadium. Next year it’s off to new digs!
Have a wonderful long weekend and remember to grab yourself a poppy!
Thank you to all the men and women who serve in our armed forces. When I see you I will shake your hands and thank you in person.
And, a posthumous thank you to all who paid the ultimate price, like my uncle Louis, who I’ve heard lots about over the years, but never got a chance to meet!
