Day 5 at Agribition: End of an era at Agribition
The RBC Beef Supreme Challenge will be the final cattle show in the Exhibition Stadium on Saturday at 4 p.m. The stadium will be demolished following the 2016 Canadian Western Agribition (CWA) to make way for the International Trade Centre (ITC). Exhibition Stadium is home to the Swamp – the iconic bar tucked under the stands – and many exhibitors will be stopping by for last call in their favourite watering hole. On Sat., Nov. 26 at 9:30 p.m., CWA will host the Farewell to the Swamp Cabaret Round 2 with music by Third Degree Birnz.
Phase two final construction of the ITC will start early in the new year with a target completion date of November 2017 in time for next year’s CWA. The remaining half of the Winter Fair Building will be taken down in early January, followed by demolition of the Pasqua and Harlton buildings.
Merle Thomason has a sentimental connection to the Harlton Building. Not only was it named after her grandpa Charlie Harlton, but she also showed swine and fat steers in the Harlton building at the first CWA 46 years ago.
“My family is extremely proud to be five generations strong at Agribition,” says Merle. “I can see my grandchildren being able to use the new facilities to carry on the Harlton legacy.”
