Drinking and driving is never tolerated or acceptable.
The Regina Police Service is ready for New Years Eve celebrations Saturday, but hoping people make the smart choice to not drink and drive.
Sargent Colin Glas with the Traffic Safety Act says there will be a larger police presence around the city Saturday night.
“We do have extra staff on-hand that will be out and enforcing impaired driving, and that will be their primary focus of targeting people in drinking establishments and around the city that have consumed alcohol and made the choice to get behind the wheel.”
Beginning at midnight police will be enforcing the new impaired and distracted driving laws as well.
Experienced drivers that are charged for the first time with having a blood alcohol content over .04 will have their vehicle seized for three days.
Come midnight New Years Eve it will also be illegal to be holding a cell phone while driving now, instead of just using one while behind the wheel.
There are many alternatives to drinking and driving always available , but tonight the city of Regina is offering free bus services from 7:15 p.m. until 2:15 a.m. Operation Red Nose will also be around to get people home safely.
Last year, police charged four people with impaired driving on New Years Eve.
