This morning after work I have to head out to the east part of the city to see my dentist, but fortunately, it’s just for a cleaning.
I really don’t know what it is about the dentist that gets most people, including me, uptight. Dental procedures have come such a long way that even getting the needle doesn’t hurt anymore. Still, I get butterflies whenever I head into that office.
It might have something to do with the smell and it definitely has everything to do with the sounds. You’re sitting out in the reception area and you hear that drill going off in the background and you can just picture the smoke coming out of someones mouth, their eyes wide open with fear, just waiting for the dentist to hit a tender spot of the tooth. You’re in the front office just waiting to hear the accompanying scream!
Even when I go in for just a cleaning, my muscles still tighten from the time I sit down until the time I’m out of that chair. And getting your teeth cleaned doesn’t even hurt!
One of the worst parts about a visit now is the incredibly bad choice of reading material. I normally have my choice of an 8 year old National Geographic or an array of womens magazines. People always joke about the reading material available when you go see a dentist. Well, it’s no joke. It sucks.
A visit to see the dentist certainly isn’t as scary as it was when I was a kid, but it’s still not something I look forward to. Then again, I don’t think anyone looks forward to a trip to see the dentist, especially if they’re going strictly for the reading material.
