So who is Sturgill Simpson? You first might be asking why is this such a big question in the first place. Well to back track a bit he’s a indie artist from Kentucky whose been nicknamed The Savior of Country Music. Pretty heavy title to be tossed. Especially if you weren’t really wanting it. It’s something that gets thrown in when he’s interviewed and he’s mentioned his great dislike of the label but let’s be honest he’s really good and when you’re buddies with the late Merle Haggard it’s kind of hard to dodge a label like that.
He’s one of those artists that get little radio play in the states because he’s not like everyone else so must gain fans the old fashioned way of playing shows and getting by on word of mouth. It’s worked though as he was eventually signed to a major label and released his first major label album, A Sailors Guide To Earth. Now it’s kind of a trippy album in that it’s nothing you can recommend to grab single songs from Itunes, you actually have to sit and really listen to it to get the whole experience. Obviously enough people felt the same as he’s up for not just Best Country Album but Album of the year at the Grammys and he’s against good company. So if he wins it’s going to be a huge victory not just for him but everyone like him.
