With a warm spell upon us, SGI Canada is reminding people to keep downspouts and gutters free of snow and ice buildup to make sure the melting roof snow has a place to go, rather than creating ice dams.
What is an ice dam?
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that backs up water, which often leaks into homes, causing significant damage to walls, ceilings and insulation.
SGI Canada recommends taking a roof rake or hiring a professional to clear the snow from your roof.
SGI Spokesperson Kelly Brinkworth says it’s a good idea to check to see if coverage for ice dams is included in your home insurance policy, since it’s not an automatic inclusion.
Brinkworth also advises people make sure their attic is properly insulated and vented, so warm air doesn’t escape and melt the snow on the roof.
