Veteran homelessness is on the rise, and to help those living on the streets, the Royal Canadian Legion in Saskatchewan has launched a donation drive.
Rossel Marion is a provincial service officer with the Royal Canadian Legion. He says the goal of the drive is to help provide basic and essential items to those in need.
ITEMS IN NEED:
- Socks and underwear
- Gloves and mitts
- Toques and hats
- Rain ponchos
- Thin blankets and towels
- Razors and shaving cream
- Body wash and shampoo
- Feminine hygiene products
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
- Snacks and gift certificates for a restaurant (e.g. Subway)
- Re-usable water bottles/travel mugs
- Mosquito repellent
Marion says approximately 10% of the homeless population are veterans, and the problem is getting worse with many young veterans coming home and struggling after missions abroad.
People are encouraged to drop off their donations at any of the 171 Legion locations across the province, or at Cabela’s in Regina.
The donation drive runs until the end of March.
