Regina Mayor Michael Fougere — along with Regina city council — have had a meeting Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall to discuss the province’s aggressive approach at reducing the deficit.
At the SUMA convention in Saskatoon, Wall announced the provincial debt had grown to 1.2-billion dollars adding “everything was on the table” in order to reduce the deficit.
Mayor Fougere says making such drastic cuts leaves communities with no priorities and emerging cities like Regina and Saskatoon will be forced to carry the load.
He says they were able to discuss ideas on deficit reduction strategies and also hear the provinces current financial situation in more detail.
Fougere said one of their ideas was to have larger tax changes and exemptions as opposed to the program changes and cuts the province has been considering.
