On February 15, 1965 the national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill.
Every year since 1996, when Parliament declared February 15th as National Flag of Canada Day, Canadians celebrate its flag.
In 2017, the National Flag of Canada is celebrating its 52nd anniversary. Canadians are invited to celebrate this important symbol of our identity by organizing their own events and by showing their pride on social media.
Post a picture or video of you with the flag on social media using #canadianflag.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, will speak at the celebrations for National Flag of Canada Day on Wednesday.
Minister Joly will be joined by the Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of Democratic Institutions; Joan O’Malley, who sewed the first National flag in 1965; and Sandra Hanington, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint.
During the ceremony, the Royal Canadian Mint will unveil a coin commemorating Canada 150.
