Despite not showing up for a board of internal economy meeting to discuss government cuts, the Official Opposition NDP say they are in favor of reducing MLA’s salaries.
NDP MLA for Saskatoon Centre David Forbes said they have approached the province with the idea of MLA pay cuts themselves.
We will accept a wage cut and in fact we’ve written to the assembly services wanting to know how we can make this happen, because we will do it,” Forbes said.
In the letter to the province Forbes stated the NDP is ready to cut salaries by 3.5% immediately.
Forbes said their reason for not showing up to the meeting Wednesday morning was the fact their other demands have not been met, such as cutting MLA’s and cutting cabinet pay by 20%.
The meeting was to “rubber stamp” and make the pay cuts to MLA’s and government workers official.
The province said the NDP’s decision to not show up for the meeting was disappointing .
