After a season that saw them go 32-4, the University of Regina Cougar womens basketball team is in Victoria B-C to compete in the USports Canada national championship.
The Cougars will play McGill University in a quarter-final matchup starting at 8 o’clock Regina time.
Head coach Dave Taylor says his team will need a strong defensive effort not just tonight, but all weekend in what is an event where he feels six of the eight teams have a legitimate shot at winning it all.
The final goes on Sunday.
On Wednesday night, one member of the team was recognized with a national award as Kyanna Giles was named the top rookie in the country.
She finished second on the Cougars in scoring with an average of 12.9 points per game and also had a team-leading average of 7.3 rebounds per game while leading Regina in steals during the Canada West schedule. Giles eclipsed the 20-point barrier on three occasions in conference play, including a season-high 25 points in a win at Brandon.
She is the 2nd Cougar to win the award joining Andrea Gottselig in 1996.
