The NDP says it is alarmed at more layoffs by government agencies.
Opposition critic Warren McCall says the Responsible Gambling Unit is being reduced from five positions to one job.
“Can the minister who presides over a corporation where responsible gambling is part of their mandate … can the minister provide for the house some explanation of how that makes any sense whatsoever?” asked McCall in the Saskatchewan Legislature Thursday.
SaskGaming minister Christine Tell says business decisions are being made at SaskGaming. She says the organization will still take charge of problem gambling situations which arise.
According to a government spokesperson, SaskGaming maintains a statistic on the number of interactions staff have with the GameSense responsible gambling unit regarding guests’ gambling behavior.
In a memo to media, a government official says in 2015-16, staff at Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw had 130 interactions with the GameSense responsible gambling unit relating to a guests’ gambling behavior.
According to the official, staff are trained to look for red flag gambling behaviours which may be an indication of a problem, but it is the job of a health care professional to clinically diagnose a gambling problem.
