Regina’s Prairie Dragons Paddling Club is competing in their sixth international race in 13 years in Ponce, Puerto Rico this weekend.
About 430 athletes from 19 different clubs across North and South America will be competing in the Pan American Club Crew Championships.
Allan McIntyre, president of the Prairie Dragons Paddling Club, said they’ve had success in many of these events in the past, and he hopes their international experience will play in their favour.
On Friday — in both the mixed 500 metre and mixed 2000 metre races — Senior A1 won silver and Senior A2 won bronze. The paddling club’s mixed Senior B team also won bronze in the 500 metre, and the mixed Senior C team took home bronze in the 2000 metre.
McIntyre said they’re racing in smaller 10-person boats this weekend, instead of the traditional 20-person ones. He believes these new smaller boats are the future of the sport.
