SGI Canada is reminding residents to take proper precautions to prevent water from making its way into basements as the snow begins to melt.
With a well above normal runoff expected southeast of Estevan, Sask. and above normal runoff expected by Hudson Bay, Sask., SGI is cautioning people to make sure their sump pumps are working and snow is shoveled away from the foundation of their houses.
Tyler McMurchy with SGI Canada says around 60 per cent of the claims they received in 2016 were related to water damage.
He says a good tip is making sure your property is properly graded with the ground sloping away from the home.
The first official day of spring is Monday.
