The town of Ituna, 165 kilometers north of Regina, was hoping to be named winner of the Kraft Hockeyville Saturday night but it wasn’t to be.
Just before the Hockey Night in Canada doubleheader started, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the town of O’Leary, Prince Edward Island had won the annual contest.
Both towns will receive 100,000 dollars for an arena upgrade, but the Prince Edward Island town will now win the right to host an NHL exhibition game prior to the start of next season.
That game will be between the New Jersey Devils and Ottawa Senators. It is not known what teams would have come to Saskatchewan had Ituna won.
On Friday, the town’s economic development officer Karla Sauve said win or lose, the entire experience has been tremendous as it has showed a lot of community spirit with the entire town getting involved.
No Saskatchewan community has won the Kraft Hockeyville contest in its 11 year history.
