Yesterday, finally, the baseball season got underway. The Blue Jays lost 3-2, thanks to a walk off home run by the Orioles Mark Trumbo. Last year the Blue Jays ended the Orioles season the exact same way. Like they say, turnabout is fair play!
Checking out all of the 2016 predictions from American and Canadian prognosticators, the Blue Jays are picked to finish either 2nd or 3rd. in their division. They lost a lot of power in the off season, but their starting rotation is one of the best in baseball. However, if one guy goes down, the boys are in some serious trouble. My prediction? Second in the east with a possible wild card spot. A little vague? Perhaps, but the boys just don’t “wow” me this year.
Baseball has to be the most stat-driven sport there is. They have a stat for everything. This pitcher pitches best in an outdoor stadium when the weather is between 75 and 80 degrees on Tuesday nights after him and his wife had a beautiful lunch at a seaside restaurant. What if there is no seaside restaurant in the city that this particular guy is pitching in? Doesn’t sound too promising. Uh oh, better pull him or fly him out to California for some lobster before the game!
A phrase that is way overused is “on pace.” Mark Trumbo hit that game winning home run yesterday. With that piece of information we can assume that Trumbo is on pace for 162 home runs this year! Obviously, that’ll never happen. You’ll hear that a lot this year, and in fairness, you hear that phrase in all sports. This guy’s on pace for that, that guy’s on pace for this. It never ends.
I will faithfully be cheering on the Blue Jays as I have for many, many years. We will just have to wait to see how it all unfolds.
Only 161 more games to go!
