The Western Development Museum in Moose Jaw has started a campaign to keep Saskatchewan’s only operational steam-powered locomotive on the tracks.
The 1914 Vulcan locomotive has been running on the Short Line 101 outside the museum since 1978, but the tracks have deteriorated to the point where the locomotive couldn’t run last year.
The museum’s Education Public Programs Coordinator Karla Pratt says many people in the community were disappointed when they heard it wasn’t running.
“It’s an amazing experience to come and see it,” said Pratt. “You know, the smell of the steam, the sounds, the whistle blowing. It can’t be replicated on a TV screen. To have those things live is incredible.”
The WDM is hoping to raise 101-thousand dollars to rebuild the tracks, provide maintenance, and build a shelter for the locomotive.
