A well known actor originally from Saskatoon is travelling back to Saskatchewan to receive an honourary degree from the University of Saskatchewan in June.
Kim Coates, who began as a stage actor, then into movies and into his most well known role as Tig Trager in the television series Sons of Anarchy, will be awarded an honourary Doctor of Letters by his alma mater at the U of S Spring Convocation on June 6.
Coates has fond memories of his hometown and the university, including the Hangar Building, where his acting career began.
“I was never more happy than when I was walking to that building,” Coates remembers.
Coates is also involved in local and international charities including Creative Kids Saskatoon, which connects local youth to artistic and cultural experiences.
To date, more than 1,500 children have been funded.
Coates wouldn’t allude to the topic of his acceptance speech, but said he hopes to be entertaining and humble.
U of S President Peter Stoicheff said, even though Kim Coates has become a star, he still works with a multitude of charities and has never forgotten his Prairie roots.
