If you’re taking the time to head out to the provincial or national parks, a reminder animals are out of hibernation, and the Ministry of the Environment has some tips to keep you safe.
Most big predators, including more specifically bears and their young will be out in full force trying to fill up after a long hibernation, but if you walk into a situation aware of what’s needed to be done, you have a much better chance of walking away unscathed.
Conservation Officer Rich Hildebrand says despite the myth that simply running is the best idea – it could do more harm than good.
“Just try and stay calm and back off slowly,” said Hildebrand. “Make yourself look bigger and don’t look directly at the bear. Just keep moving to towards a tree or a rock – something for protection.”
Hildebrand adds if you are taking food out with you camping, or just on a hike, remember, keep a lid on it, otherwise you could help attract unwanted guests.
